Turkey's U21 campaign on target
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
ImageTurkey's record in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship is decidedly mixed but with a talented team in winning form, they could be one of the prime forces in Sweden next summer.

Play-off aim

Last night's 3-0 win against Liechtenstein in Adana lifted unbeaten Turkey up to second in Group 2, within one point of the Czech Republic with three games left to their rivals' two. Should Turkey prevail in Armenia on 20 August, victory three weeks later at home to the Czech Republic would ensure Ümit Davala's side a place in the play-offs as group winners.

That is a fine run for a nation whose sole qualification, in 2000, resulted in three defeats and eleven goals conceded, and who have since lost in two play-offs and not even got that far twice more.

Reasons to be cheerful for Sweden
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
Coach Jörgen Lennartsson was in upbeat mood after a series of good performances from Sweden during a four-team tournament which ended on Saturday.

Image'Experience'

Sweden were undefeated after playing out goalless draws with Portugal and the Netherlands and a 1-1 stalemate with France, and Lennartsson believes there are plenty of positives that can be drawn from the event. "It's been a really good tournament," he said. "Playing against three such strong sides has given us a lot of experience which will be very important ahead of next year's tournament."

Everybody do the Hopp Holland
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
ImageThere may have been nothing at stake for the Netherlands against Romania tonight but that did not stop their fans descending in their tens of thousands on their team's group stage home of Berne today.

Swiss support

The compact and quiet Swiss federal capital has resembled Rotterdam over the last week or so whenever the fleet have been in town, and only one corner of the Stade de Suisse was Romanian yellow rather than orange.

Maybe even some locals joined in, as a poll taken a few days ago revealed that the Netherlands had pipped Portugal as the team the Swiss wished to see triumph following their own nation's exit. From "Hopp Schwiiz" to "Hopp Holland".

TV figures 'quite extraordinary'
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
ImageUEFA EURO 2008™ is also proving an overwhelming success off the pitch, with television audiences at an extremely high level, corporate hospitality drawing large numbers and innovations in the fields of transport and facilities for impaired supporters attracting widespread support.

‘Extraordinary' figures

Television audiences were described as "quite extraordinary, almost historic," by UEFA communications director William Gaillard on Wednesday. "The figures in Germany in particular are absolutely astounding. Never before in a UEFA European Championship have we had these kind of figures. In the Netherlands it was probably an all-time high for Dutch TV and I don't think it's possible to get more than 80 per cent of a population that is watching TV to be watching one programme when you have so many channels offering other things."
