Evergreen Maldini plays on
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
ImageAC Milan defender Paolo Maldini has decided to extend his playing career by signing a new one-year contract with the Rossoneri.

Age-defying
The five-times European Champion Clubs' Cup winner, who turns 40 on 26 June, was expected to retire at the end of the recently concluded Serie A season. But former Italian international Maldini, capped on 126 occasions by his country, has defied his years once again to agree a 12-month extension to remain at San Siro.

Change of heart
"I still have plenty of energy," he said earlier this year, the first hint that he would consider a remarkable 24th term in top-flight football, having made his league debut in 1985. "I know I should stick with what I said originally, but I think only stupid people don't change their minds because of something they said earlier."

ImageACF Fiorentina have made FK Partizan midfielder Stevan Jovetić their second major signing of the week, paying the Serbian club a reported €8m for the 18-year-old Montenegrin.

Title glory

Having landed AC Milan forward Alberto Gilardino on Wednesday ahead of their return to the UEFA Champions League next season, the Viola beat off competition from a number of top European teams to recruit Jovetić on a long-term deal.

The teenager scored eleven goals in 23 games for Partizan last term, captaining the Belgrade giants to championship glory. He won his only international cap in a March 2007 friendly against Hungary. (uefa.com)

Juve shell out €15.3m for Amauri
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
Juventus have made their first acquisition ahead of their return to UEFA Champions League action by signing Brazilian striker Amauri from Serie A rivals US Città di Palermo for €15.3m plus Antonio Nocerino.

ImageGoal haul
The Sao Paulo-born Amauri, 27, scored an impressive 15 goals in 34 league appearances for the Sicillian outfit in 2007/08 and joins the Bianconeri on a four-year contract. Amauri moved to Palermo from AC Chievo Verona in summer 2006 as a replacement for Luca Toni, having previously spent time with SSC Napoli and on loan at FC Messina and Piacenza Calcio.

Makeweight
Travelling in the opposite direction is midfielder Nocerino. The 23-year-old made his Italy debut in October's friendly against South Africa and was a regular as Juve finished third in the top-flight to qualify for the third qualifying round of Europe's premier club competition. He will face competition for a place in the Rosanero midfield from Fabio Liverani, 32, who has agreed a three-year contract after a free transfer from ACF Fiorentina.

Roma equal record by toppling Inter
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
AS Roma equalled Juventus's record of nine Coppa Italia wins by retaining the trophy with a 2-1 success against Serie A champions FC Internazionale Milano.

ImageCup consolation
Facing the Giallorossi in the final for the fourth successive season, Inter had the chance to complete a domestic double at the Stadio Olimpico. Yet it was Roma who had the last laugh, triumphing thanks to strikes from defender Philippe Mexes and Simone Perrotta, to give Luciano Spalletti's men some consolation for losing out on the Scudetto to the Nerazzurri on the final day of the season last week.

Record-equalling win
France international Mexes ghosted unmarked into the area to strike a David Pizarro corner inside the near post in the 35th minute, while Perotta doubled the lead following a one-two with forward Mirko Vučinić eight minutes after the break. Inter's Portuguese midfielder Pelé, on as a substitute, pulled a goal back just before the hour with a shot from 25 metres but Roma held on to draw level with Juventus as the competition's most successful club. The Chivu conundrum
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
ImageAs Romania prepare to take on France in their opening Group C fixture, one of the biggest decisions facing coach Victor Piţurcă is where to play captain Cristian Chivu. The 27-year-old defender carried out full-back duties at AFC Ajax before moving to his preferred centre-back position at AS Roma and current club FC Internazionale Milano.

Midfield role

However, the emergence of Dorin Goian and Gabriel Tamaş as a reliable central-defensive partnership has allowed Piţurcă to field his versatile captain as a holding midfielder, while Chivu has successfully deputised on the left when the likes of Răzvan Cociş and Mirel Rădoi have missed out through injury.
