Scolari set for Chelsea after EURO

ImageJust a few hours after his Portugal team had defeated the Czech Republic in Geneva to set up qualification for the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2008™, Luiz Felipe Scolari was named as the new manager of Chelsea FC – a role that the Brazilian will take up on 1 July.

Club statement

Chelsea issued a statement on Wednesday night saying: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Luiz Felipe Scolari will be the club's new manager from July 1, 2008." A FIFA World Cup winner with Brazil in 2002, Scolari has held the reins of the Portugal team since 2003 and led them to the final of UEFA EURO 2004™ and the last four of the 2006 World Cup. Scolari's contract was due to end at the conclusion of the EURO and the hope of Portugal fans now is he will sign off with a flourish by guiding his team to their first European crown.

Miller time once more for Rangers

ImageScotland striker Kenny Miller has become the first player in the modern era to cross the Old Firm divide twice after rejoining Rangers FC in a €2.5m from Derby County FC.

Miller delight

The 28-year-old, who left city rivals Celtic FC in the summer of 2007 in a €3.8m deal, has agreed a three-year contract with the Scottish Premier League club and returns seven years after leaving for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. "It's taken longer than I expected but I'm delighted," said Miller.

Ronaldo scoops ESM Golden Shoe

ImageManchester United FC forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the ESM Golden Shoe after scoring 31 goals in the 2007/08 Premier League season.

Eight-point margin

The 23-year-old, who is in Switzerland preparing for Portugal's UEFA EURO 2008™ quarter-final match against Germany, finished the domestic campaign eight points clear of his closest rival in the race to be Europe's leading goalscorer.

Daniel Güiza of RCD Mallorca came second with 27 Primera División goals, while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's 33 Eredivisie strikes, at 1.5 points a goal, earned the AFC Ajax forward third place in the ranking. The date of the presentation ceremony will be announced at a later date. (uefa.com)
 
Promising Song strengthens Arsenal ties

ImageArsenal FC midfielder Alexandre Song has signed a new long-term contract with the London club.

Fresh terms

Though no details have been disclosed, the new deal will keep the 20-year-old in north London beyond June 2010 when his previous contract was set to expire. Capped eight times by Cameroon, he is the second Arsenal player to renew his ties with the Premier League side in the last week after Bacary Sagna.

Song arrived at the club on loan from French outfit SC Bastia in 2005, a deal that was turned into a permanent transfer in July of the following year. A loan spell with Charlton Athletic FC followed in 2006/07, before Song returned to Arsenal last season and made nine league appearances and two in the UEFA Champions League. (uefa.com)
 
Muamba swaps Birmingham for Bolton

ImagePremier League side Bolton Wanderers FC have signed England Under-21 midfielder Fabrice Muamba from relegated Birmingham City FC for a fee of just under €6.5m.

'Good grounding'

The 20-year-old, originally a trainee at Arsenal FC, has agreed a four-year deal with his new club, and is manager Gary Megson's first signing of the summer. "Fabrice is a tough-tackling central midfielder who has had a good grounding with the Arsenal youth set-up," said Megson, whose side finished 16th in the 20-team Premier League. "He'll be a tremendous asset to Bolton Wanderers over the coming seasons."
