The 100 millionth vote has just been cast in the Monster 2008 All-Star Game Online Ballot, marking the earliest point that milestone has been reached in a Major League Baseball All-Star campaign, MLB.com announced on Wednesday. Reaching 100 million took only 50 days. Last year, online voting passed that milestone on day 67 of the balloting process. Yes, this definitely is the year of the pumped-up voter. There are only two weeks left to help decide the starters for the 79th All-Star Game on July 15 at Yankee Stadium. The ballpark paper ballot process is in a gradual shutdown process, and it won't be long before all those votes are lumped in with digital votes and those all-important decisions will be announced. |

Mariners dismiss manager McLaren |
|
Friday, 20 June 2008 |
SEATTLE -- The 2008 season began with high expectations and loads of promise for the Mariners after an 88-win campaign in 2007 and several high-profile acquisitions in the offseason. But that promise has transformed into nothing less than a nightmare through the first 72 games -- a bad dream that finally was put to an end for manager John McLaren on Thursday morning, when the team announced he was relieved of his duties and replaced by bench coach Jim Riggleman as the team heads to Atlanta for a three-game series beginning Friday. "On a personal level, this was a very difficult decision to make," interim general manager Lee Pelekoudas said at a press conference late Thursday morning. "John McLaren and I and many of us in the organization go back a long ways -- back to the 1990s when he first joined us. But from a strictly professional level, I felt this was the right thing to do for the ballclub and for the further advancement of the organization." |

Rays rule Cubs with seven-run seventh |
|
Friday, 20 June 2008 |
PETERSBURG -- Youth baseball coaches were smiling throughout the Tampa Bay area after the Rays affirmed the time-tested dictum, "a walk's as good as a hit" during Thursday night's 8-3 rout of the Cubs. The win was the Rays' 43rd of the season, and moved the team to 14 games over .500, a club-record high-water mark. Along the way, the Rays completed their fifth series sweep of the season and the first sweep in franchise history of a team with the best record in the Major Leagues. The Rays are now 35-18 since April 22, which is the best record in baseball over that span. Pan to the bottom of the seventh -- directly after the Cubs had taken a 3-1 lead -- when Willy Aybar led off the inning by working a walk against Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol. The Cubs' right-hander then made matters worse by walking the next hitter, Dioner Navarro. |
